A keypad that beeps while the door ignores it usually has weak batteries, a lock switch turned on at the wall, or a signal the opener never cleanly got. Check those before buying a new pad. You punch the code. It beeps. Nothing moves.
That pad is wireless. It talks to the opener the same way a remote does. When it beeps and the door stays put, the opener often never got a clean signal. Or the opener got it and a lock switch on the wall killed every wireless input while the hardwired wall button still works.
If the pad light is dim, lazy, or only the first digit flashes
Start with the pad itself. Most outdoor keypads run on a small battery pack. Cold nights kill those packs fast. Rain and sun age the contacts. If the light is dim, lazy, or only flashes on the first digit, swap the batteries before you reprogram anything. Wipe the face. Wet buttons and dirty contacts make codes fail even when the battery is fine. Try the code again from a few feet back after the fresh pack clicks in. A pad that wakes bright after a battery swap and still gets ignored is a different fork.
If the pad is bright, remotes are mute, and the wall button still works
Then check the wall control inside the garage. A lot of units have a lock or vacation switch. When that is on, remotes and keypads go mute. The wall button still opens the door. Kids bump it. Someone hits it while dusting. Flip it back and try the pad again from outside. If every wireless input died at once and the hardwired button still works, that lock switch is high on the list before you buy a new keypad.
If the pad is bright, remotes work from the driveway, and the wall lock is off
The stored code may be gone. Power blips and board resets wipe wireless codes on some openers. The pad still beeps because its own battery is fine. The opener just no longer knows that code. Put the opener into learn mode and teach the pad again using the brand sticker on the motor head. Use that sticker. Do not follow a random video for a different brand. Stand where the pad usually sits when you press the learn button sequence. If learn mode never takes, the pad radio or the opener board may be the next check for a shop.
If the pad works only when you stand close, or it works some days and fails others
Weak batteries still cause that pattern. So does a wet face after rain. Wipe the pad. Swap the pack even if the light still looks okay. This is still a pad and wireless fork, not a spring or track job.
What it is not
This is different from a remote that does nothing. Dead remotes are often silent. No beep. No flash. Coin cells or lock mode. Here the pad still talks. You hear it. The missing piece is power in the pad, a wall lock killing wireless, or a code that never saved.
It is also different from sensors that keep blinking by the floor. Blinking eyes usually stop a closing door mid travel. They do not explain a keypad that never wakes the opener at all.
And it is the opposite of a door that opens by itself. Phantom opens are often a leftover prior owner keypad code, a stuck button, or a remote jammed under a seat. That door moves when nobody asked. This one refuses when you ask with a code.
What not to do
Do not stand on a ladder under a half open door poking the logic board. Do not yank the red cord unless you need a car out and the door still feels even by hand, the same check as opening the door in a power outage. Do not buy a new keypad before you check the batteries, the wall lock, and learn mode on your brand. Do not follow a random YouTube walkthrough for the wrong opener family.
I am not a contractor. This is what shows up when the outside pad beeps and the door acts like you never touched it. A shop that works on garage doors will test the pad batteries, the wall lock, the learn button, and the opener board before they sell you a new keypad you did not need.
